Edwin Arthur Whitfield was born in June 1938, the youngest of four children and, by his own telling, the most spoiled and the least aware of it. The family farm kept everyone busy, but his earliest memories were small and specific: the smell of walnuts drying in the attic, his mother's hymn while starching shirts, and the way his father marked the height of each child on the pantry door.
